No dowry will be taken for Marriage, in the shape of Money or Jewelry.

A very bold stand taken by Pottalpudur (Tirunelveli District, Tamil Nadu) Shafi Jamath.

During the marriage, dowry neither in the shape of Net Cash nor Jewelry will be taken from the girls' family. This has been decided by the Shafi Jamath of Pottalpudur, a small town of Tirunelveli District, at Tamil Nadu.

Agony of Dowry

It has been the practice in all religions, the girl's family offers a huge amount of money and golden jewelry as dowry to the boy's family, during marriage. This practice of demanding and accepting maximum dowry by the boys' families is considered a status symbol and a prestige issue for them.

Due to this, poor ladies are becoming hopeless of their marriage. Moreover, the sky-rocketing gold prices are forcing the parents to undergo too much financial hardship.

Marriage without Dowry

In such circumstances, the Shafi Jamath of Pottalpudur has passed a bold resolution, with a decision not to take any dowry from the girls' families during marriages.

Pottalpudur Shafi Jamath has conducted a two days debate in their mosque regarding the Abolition of Dowry System. Several youths and other speakers participated in the meet and spoke about the financial torture and hardship the families of the girls undergoing.
